Indications/Uses
Relief of heartburn symptoms associated w/ acid reflux in patients ≥18 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Concomitant use w/ HIV PIs eg, atazanavir, nelfinavir.
Special Precautions
Patients treated for heartburn or indigestion continuously for ≥4 wk. History of gastric ulcer or stomach surgery. Patients >55 yr taking nonprescription indigestion treatment daily; w/ new or recently changed reflux symptoms. Patients due to have endoscopy, C-urea test, & Chromogranin A test. Concomitant use w/ HIV PIs; methotrexate. Risk of vit B12 deficiency, symptomatic & asymptomatic hypomagnesemia, & osteoporosis-related fractures in long-term therapy. Monitor Mg levels prior to therapy & periodically. Increased risk of GI infections; subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE). May impair ability to drive & operate machines. Hepatic impairment or jaundice. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescents <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Benign polyps in stomach. Headache; dizziness; diarrhoea; feeling sick, vomiting; bloating & flatulence; constipation; dry mouth; bellyache & discomfort; skin rash or hives; itching; feeling weak, exhausted or generally unwell; sleep disorders; increase in liver enzymes; fracture in the hip, wrist or spine. Hypersensitivity reactions; serious skin reactions; yellowing of the skin & eyes (due to liver damage), kidney problems eg, painful urination & lower back pain.
Drug Interactions
May elevate & prolong serum levels of methotrexate leading to toxicities. HIV PIs eg, atazanavir, nelfinavir; ketoconazole; warfarin & phenprocoumon; other proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole, lansoprazole, or rabeprazole); H2 antagonist (eg, ranitidine, famotidine).
